Ostbahnhof to Morphine - For Vision Impaired

For Screenreader users:

At the S-Bahn isles at Ostbahnhof there is scaffolding up over the center of most of the isle. The scaffolding makes the walking space narrower than usual, now it is approximately 1 meter broad, with the guide-lines on the ground still showing. The escalator downwards is not working, the escalator up to the isle is working normally. At the east far side of both isles, there is no scaffolding, and there is an elevator.

Navigate towards any southern exit of the station (main exit, or one of the others to its right). Beware that on the vertical hallway, there are trashcans and navigation signs located in the middle of the hallway, with other various signs and booths located in the main hall.

When outside, with your back to the Ostbahnhof, take a right on that same sidewalk. When leaving from one of the main exit doors, after approximately 130 meters the sidewalk moves to the left some, going around a gated structure. Beware of oncoming pedestrians, as this sidewalk is a tad narrow. Follow the sidewalk downwards until you feel the change from bigger to smaller tiles. Here the level evens again. On your right hand you’ll feel the bigger tiles again, and move slightly right onto them (avoiding a streetlight with bikes tied to it), to reach the streetside, again in small tiles.

Cross the street straight over (usually not a lot of traffic). There is a small traffic island with low level, but you can also walk to the left of it. On the other side there are short poles on the sidewalk, to their left a big streetlight. Left of the streetlight is where the zebra. Turn left over that zebra and cross the street (more traffic, cars and busses, sometimes bycicles, on that street).

When on the other side, you want to walk a diagonal footpath at ten past / 45 degree angle to your right and front. Crossing some different stone textures described before, this path, which is approximately 1,75m broad has medium-small rectangular tiles, alternating vertical and horizontal. In 90 meters it will bring you to the diagonal streetcorner, where you will cross Holzmarktstraße. This is a busy, two lane street, with an island in between, with traffic lights that tick. Sidewalks are very low, but beware a big concrete structure in the middle of the sidewalk on the island, right before the next traffic light.

Crossing the second lane, you keep a right and go straight ahead, you’ll be on the left side of Engeldamm. Here there are more of the concrete structures (these hold heating pipes that go above and below ground). Also beware that on this stretch there may be broken glass on the ground, and there may be an elevated risk of electric scooters strewn over the sidewalk. At this time it was clear enough to pass though. You’ll pass a party establishment called YAAM, and start to elevate. This is the Schillingbrüke, going over the Spree. The bridge is 70 meters long, and its incline and decline are very gradual. On the bridge itself there are some guid-lines which may not be intended as such. But you could keep the straight ahead ones to your right, to be sure.

One may notice after passing the water, there is open space to your left, with some bushes. There is also one patch of concrete in between regular tiled sidewalk, which has some slight unevenness / sloppiness. It’s unlikely to trip you, but beware. Then after perhaps 15 meters of regular tile, there is a one meter high pole in the middle of the sidewalk as well as on the right. Following, is another patch of slightly sloppy concrete. After that you walk approximately 120 meters with a slight leftward tilt (on the right edge of the sidewalk you feel a +/- 30cm strip of small tiles), to reach the streetcorner. You’ll have passed some small trees and a big advertisement sign which might cast a shadow over you. When you pass a diagonal double strip of medium sized old fashioned tiles (in their middle there is a plate that says “Berliner Mauer,” in relief, then in about 3 to 4 meters you stand at the streetside. Also here, the edge of the sidewalk is indicated by the strip of small sized tiles, and you might meet a thin streetpole. Past that pole is the pedestrian crossing space.

Here you’ll cross Köpenicker Straße, straight ahead. This crossing has traffic lights. This is a busy street, with cars, busses, and bicycles. On each side of the street there, there is a bus stop. There’s a tiny island in the middle of the street, only slightly elevated, with a big streetlight pole in its middle. On the other side of Köpenicker Straße, take a left. From the corner it’s 80 meters until you take a right into the ‘driveway’ leading to Morphine Raum. It’s the second one that you’ll pass.

The main, middle space of this sidewalk is made up of the large old stone slabs that are somewhat uneven from one another, with the usual small tiles to the left and right edges of the sidewalk. You’ll notice the first ‘exit/entree/driveway’ from its medium sized chunky stones, that can have big gaps between them, so don’t wear heals ;-) The second time you feel the medium chunky stones, that’s the entreeway to Morphine Raum on your right hand.

The entree is a big gate, with a gate-door to its right side. These may or may not be standing open upon your arrival, but you’ll be able to open the gate-door and step through it. Beware that right in front of the date-door there is a pothole located in the ground which is slightly elevated. There’s some sand to the left of it, where they seem to have filled a hole newly.

The subsequent structure is: first a parking lot/courtyard, with a low building structure on your left side, then a big high building with a crossing underneath it, then the second courtyard, and then another big high building in which Morphine Raum is located. It’s about 40 meters from the gate to the door of Morphine Raum. The stones on the parking lot/courtyard are medium small dogbone shaped. However, there is one straight line of thin straight stones going from the gate, straight through the right edge of the passageway passing under the first building. Slight elevation there, then down again after the passage, there you’ll find slightly uneven asphalt/concrete ground surface.

Enter by stairs: There are four big steps up to the big door. If the door is closed when you get there, note that you’ll have to step back down some steps to open it and pass through. Equally, if someone comes down to let you in, beware that their opening the door outwardly, and could push you off the steps if you stand right in front of the door without their knowledge. Once inside, on your right hand side, there is one set of stairs to Morphine Raum, which you can enter to your right hand side then, or straight ahead.

Enter by elevator: When you’ve reached the bottom of the steps to the Morphine Raum door, navigate around the corner to the right of it (there could be some objects or bikes standing there), entering the passageway under that building. Note that there is a slight ramp down in the concrete. Open the door you’ll find to your left hand there and about 1,5 meter inside, to your right hand you’ll find the door to the elevator. It’s an old style elevator.
